Maternity Shoots, photography, portrait shoot

Beautiful summer’s day maternity shoot!

Summer this year has been so incredibly busy – I’ve barely had time to keep up with my blog posts!

This gorgeous Mamma-to-be came by for her maternity portrait session back in June, and gosh, did she photograph well!

Most Mammas-to-be aren’t feeling their best when they’re 8 months pregnant – but this beautiful lady proved that trend wrong! She was a natural in front of the camera, and took my breath away with every shutter click.

As usual with my maternity sessions, we started off in the studio with some traditional Mum & Dad shots:

We then moved on to some sentimental shots – with items that were to be incorporated into the newborn shoot:

We then went for a little walk to my “secret location” where we got some stunning outdoor shots!

As our shoot was at 1pm, the sun was at its highest point in the sky when we went outdoors – and this is usually every photographer’s worst nightmare. Harsh sunlight casts unflattering shadows on even the best models, and this day was no exception.

Thankfully, I had taken my off-camera flash with me, which provided a bit of extra light to lift those dark shadows on her face, meaning we could continue taking irresistible photos!

I love it when clients request the full bump to baby package – there are no words to describe the importance of leaving your legacy behind in photos that will become a family heirloom, treasured by their children & grandchildren for years to come.

Head over to my website to read up more on how to create your own legacy!

From bump… baby!

One of the best things about my job is being able to be part of a beautiful journey with my clients.

This gorgeous couple came to me for a maternity shoot back in November. We hit it off straight away, they were both such naturals in front of the camera!

After about 45 minutes in the studio, we went for a short stroll to my “secret location”.

Don’t be fooled by that golden sunshine! It was the end of November, and was actually FREEZING!

I admire Dad’s bravery, he was able to smile through his shivering so I could capture this beautiful photo!

Then, in January, I welcomed their little girl to my studio! She was as natural in front of the camera as both her parents, and we got some stunning photos!

Her family are from South Africa, so her parents were eager to incorporate small touches of this into her photos, I was only too happy to oblige!

And finally…!

No story is complete without the photos being printed and presented in a beautiful keepsake album!

What a perfect end to a perfect story…

… but of course this story isn’t over! Not by a long shot! Mum is already making plans to return to my studio when her little girl is a bit older.. Watch this space!

Baby T’s newborn portrait session

Everyone, meet Baby T!

This gorgeous girl came through my studio for her newborn portrait session, and I was super excited because I was able to make use of some of my props for the first time!

The beautiful doll in the photo is hand-made by Welsh business Cwtchi Coo, who use locally sourced wool. They make incredible props and textiles, I can’t get enough of them!

Baby T didn’t come alone to her shoot! Her big sister joined in and we got some adorable shots of the two of them together.

Baby T was a perfect model, and pretty much slept right through her whole session!

I had such a wonderful time capturing these beautiful portraits for her Mum, who spent ages agonising over which portraits to purchase (can’t say I blame her, it took me ages to whittle the final selection down to 25!)

How much are your photos?

I get a lot of new enquiries that go something along the lines of:
“Hi, I’m interested in a newborn shoot. How much are your photos?”

I struggle with questions like this because:

You wouldn’t walk into a car dealership and go “I’d like to buy a car. How much are your cars?”

Answer: it depends on what YOU want and what YOUR needs are.

The car salesman would probably inquire as to whether you want a family car, a personal car, or a company car. He would ask if you want 3 doors, or 5 doors. He would ask if you’re planning on using this car for social or commuting. He’d also ask how much power you’re after – would you want a 1.0L, 1.6L or 3.0L engine? Do you need lots of space for child car seats? Or are you an eligible bachelor looking to draw everyone’s eye?

The same goes for photography: I can’t charge one flat rate for every client that walks in through the door.

First I have a pre-shoot consultation with you: I sit down with you, either in person over a cup of coffee, or over the phone. I find out what your needs are, which images from my portfolio you love, where you would like to display your portraits, what colour schemes you have in your home, and so on. No two clients are the same, and no two shoots are the same.

Throughout our session my husband Simon and I will get to know you and your story – how you met your partner, how you found out you were pregnant, what you do for a living, etc. We build up a relationship with you to further understand what your passions are.

At the viewing, we present your portraits to you in a beautiful slideshow. We help you decide what products you want, and make every effort to ensure the decision-making process is as easy as possible. We don’t overwhelm you with 100+ photos and rush you into making a purchase!

When you book a session with me, you become part of my family. The session fees are simply retainers to guarantee you a slot in my diary.

Get in touch now if you would like to join our little family!

Your Investment

All too often, I receive inquiries that go along the lines of something like this:

“Hi, I came across your website, and I really like your photos. How much do you charge for 10 digitals?”

I get it, there are a LOT of photographers out there, and you need a way to compare them.

Most people use the price of a product to compare photographers, like you would a plumber or mechanic.

But let me tell you why this method of comparison is unreliable:

Different photographers have different levels of skill and ability.

There are those of us that have invested time and money into our art. As our skill set grows, so does our self worth and self value. We come to understand that our time is money, and charge appropriately.
We learn that when it comes to selling photographs, it’s not the paper and the ink that our clients are paying for, it’s the images that we produce.

Allow me to share a quote by Seth Godin that I live by:

This rings true especially for photographers – we don’t just click a shutter on a camera, we capture memories, moments, and details that disappear in the blink of an eye.

We spend years fine-tuning our skills. There is so much more to photography than just our cameras.

I have spent over £1000 in newborn photography training, and my photos reflect this.
When it comes to photographing your precious newborn baby, I’m one of the best out there.

So allow me to finish with this:

“If you’re choosing a photographer based on price alone, I can’t compete. There are plenty of other photographers out there who are cheaper than me, without a doubt.

But if you want the best in service and artistry; if you want to be completely taken care of every step of the way, and actually see your portraits printed beautifully on your walls, I’m your girl!

There’s no one comparable”

Rebranding: My Story

When I first started my business, I gave it a very generic name: Kalysha Photography

My logo was very simple and to-the-point. It was clean and professional, and for a while, I was happy with it.

As time passed, I grew tired of this logo. My artistic and photographic skill was developing, and I was becoming more invested in maternity and newborn photography. Baby photography was my true passion: being able to capture those tiny little features and immortalise them forever in beautiful photographs was a gift that I could offer new parents who were so sleep deprived they could barely think straight.

I started thinking about what name I could give this growing passion. I wanted something cute, something that immediately shouted “baby!”; I wanted something that was meaningful and personal to me.

After mulling it over for a few days, I landed on baby elephants.

Growing up, I was always on the chubby side, and my Dad would call me his “elephant” (in jest, I’m sure!). When my boyfriend (now husband) found out about this tease, he was delighted! He started calling me his “Heffalump” to wind me up, and so I started calling him “Dumbo” in retaliation. These names soon became terms of endearment, and when we were on our honeymoon in Thailand, I got an elephant tattooed on the inside of my right wrist.

So it was settled: My business would be named after something was was both personal and meaningful to me.

I spent a couple of weeks designing my new logo, and TA-DA!!

elephant & rabbit circle colour

Needless to say, I love my new branding – it encompasses everything I set out to achieve, and looks sleek and totally bad-ass!

Elli Cassidy Training

My newborn photography journey started back in March 2017 when I attended a training course at Fresh Studio Academy in Watford, London. The training was led by Elli Cassidy, one of the top newborn photographers in the UK.

visit Elli’s beautiful site!

It was a whirlwind of a day, our class of 6 learnt all about the studio set up, basic posing and lighting needed for a newborn photography shoot. By the end of the day, my mind was buzzing from all the information it had absorbed, and I was eager to try my hand at my own newborn sessions.

Over the next year, I spent time honing my skills and building up my business. By the end of the year I felt more confident with the direction my business was going, and I was ready to take the next step in my personal growth and development.

In early 2018, I bumped into Elli at a photography conference, and we got chatting. I told her how much I enjoyed her training at Fresh, and that I’d love the opportunity to further develop my skills with her. She suggested I take a look at the training section of her website, which offers a wider array of course options.

After some deliberation, I took the plunge and invested in a two-day 1:1 training course with her. I was a little apprehensive at first, the course was A LOT of money! I thought back to that day at Fresh and how much I learnt and how much I enjoyed myself, and it was an easy decision from there.

I saved up for the course, and BOY, was it worth it! I spent two whole days getting hands-on training with Elli, learning all her secrets: her posing and wrapping techniques, the best lighting set ups, her “baby whispers”, how she markets to local parents, and how she provides an out-of-this-world service to everyone who comes through her doors.

The two days positively flew by, and all too soon we were saying goodbye.

I learnt so much from Elli, and I simply CANNOT WAIT to put everything I learnt into practice.

I put together a short video documenting some of the best moments from our course, I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed creating it!

The Journey Begins

Hello world!

I’ve decided to start a blog to document my photography business.

You could say that I’m a bit late to the party – I’ve been photographing newborns for over a year now, so this isn’t quite the start of my journey.. oops!

However, I’m super excited to start a blog, because I’ve just got SO MUCH to share with you guys, and I can’t WAIT!

To start it all off, here is a shot from my very first newborn shoot:

Looking back, there were SO MANY things I should have done differently. Oh well! Hindsight, eh?

They say you never forget your first, and this was certainly true for me! 😉
